“We communicate in writing every day. We toss around sentence fragments – in chats, e-mails and text messages. This type of language should be quick and understandable. Even though this type of communication often comes close to colloquial language, non-verbal communication is missing entirely – gesture, intonation, etc. With DIA LOG, we asked ourselves what happens when we take mundane correspondence and add a different, visual layer to it. Is everything suddenly easier to understand, or does it become more complicated and easier to be misunderstood when daily language is visualized?”

DIA LOG is most likely the strangest project I’ve ever worked on. Georg Andrae and I attempted to communicate with each other using only typographic design.

RULE 1: no communication about the project outside of designing
RULE 2: Language has to be typographically visualized
RULE 3: Only the fonts Nevis Bold and Linotype Didot can be used
RULE 4: Only 15 minutes allowed per answer

In the end, not everybody understood this project and in hindsight, we probably didn’t either.
